Hatti Barav

Hatti Barav (Elephant well), Beed - Ahmednagar - Pune Road, Darewadi, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India

Notable historical heritage Hatti Barav at Ahmednagar – Jamkhed Highway, hardly 4 Kms away from historical city – Ahmednagar falling under Darewadi Gram Panchayat limit, has been declared as National Historical Protected Monument by the Archeological Department of India. Due to lack of traditional use of this reservoir, the importance of the stepwell decreased over time. From the past 5+ decades, the water has deteriorated in quality due to the immersion of Ganesh Idols, Nirmalyas and wastes by the locals. Many times, it was cleaned by various social organisations but, being derelict, every year idol immersion was done and garbage was thrown into it. It was cleaned with the help of local citizens and historians. Many have claimed report submission to the Archeological Department and requested to declare it as a National Protect Monument and grant it permanent Protection. To some extent, the stepwell was fenced for temporary protection and even some events were carried out to bring the awareness of the importance of this stepwell. Eventually, due to some reasons, the preservation of this historical heritage is seen neglected at all levels.
